Getting started
How do I record a track?
Open Zenith and tap Start. Zenith begins reading your elevation right away and puts a Live Activity on your Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island, so you can keep your phone in your pocket. Tap End in the app, on the Lock Screen, or on your Apple Watch to finish the track and save it to your history.
Does Zenith need to stay open?
No. Tracks keep recording while Zenith is in the background or your phone is locked. For that to work, grant Zenith Always location access when iOS asks (or in Settings → Zenith → Location). With "While Using" access, recording pauses when you leave the app.
Why did my track stop on its own?
Zenith watches for you being genuinely still — not moving and not changing elevation — and then asks whether you're done. It never ends a track silently; you always get the prompt first. You can change the idle window, or effectively disable it by setting it to 60 minutes, in Settings → Tracking → Auto-stop tracking.
Elevation & accuracy
Where does the elevation number come from?
Zenith fuses two sensors: your iPhone's barometric altimeter, which reacts to small changes instantly, and GPS altitude, which is absolute but noisy. The barometer's relative change is anchored to the most recent trustworthy GPS fix, so the reading moves the moment you do without drifting over a long day.
Why doesn't it match the elevation on a trail sign or map?
Trail signs, topographic maps and other apps can each use a different vertical reference, and GPS altitude itself carries more error than GPS position. A difference of a few metres is normal. What Zenith is built to get right is change — your climb, your descent, and your high and low points over a track.
The number is flat / stuck
Check that Location Services are on for Zenith, and give it a minute outdoors for a solid GPS fix — indoors and in parking garages there may be no usable fix at all. A phone case with a sealed cover can also blunt the barometer. If it still looks wrong, tell us what you're seeing.
Live Activity, Dynamic Island & CarPlay
I don't see the Live Activity
Make sure Live Activity is on in Zenith's Settings, and that Live Activities are allowed system-wide in Settings → Face ID & Passcode → Live Activities and in Settings → Zenith. Live Activities appear while a track is running.
Does it work in CarPlay?
Yes — when your iPhone is connected to CarPlay, iOS mirrors Zenith's Live Activity onto the CarPlay dashboard, so your current elevation and climb are visible while you drive. There's nothing to turn on.
Apple Watch
The Zenith watch app is part of Zenith Pro. It installs from the Watch app on your iPhone (My Watch → scroll to Zenith → Install). Start, watch and end a track from your wrist; on human-powered activities it also shows live heart rate. If the watch and phone disagree, open both apps once with the phone nearby to let them re-sync. The watch app requires watchOS 10 or later.
Apple Health
With Pro, turn on Save to Apple Health in Settings and Zenith saves each hike, walk, run and ride as a Health workout with its route, distance and elevation gain. Drives are never written to Health. If nothing appears in Health, check Settings → Health → Data Access & Devices → Zenith and confirm write access is enabled.
iCloud sync
With Pro, your tracks sync privately through your own iCloud account, so they stay in step across your iPhones. It needs iCloud Drive on and enough iCloud storage; sync happens in the background and can take a few minutes after a track ends. Settings → iCloud Sync shows the last successful sync and has a Sync Now button.
Zenith Pro, purchases & refunds
What's free and what's Pro?
Real-time elevation tracking, the Live Activity and Dynamic Island, and your five most recent tracks are free forever. Zenith Pro adds automatic activity detection, the live map with compass, route maps, Apple Health export, iCloud sync, the Apple Watch app, and unlimited history.
How much does Pro cost?
- Zenith Pro Yearly — an auto-renewing subscription, $9.99 per year (US), starting with a 7-day free trial. It renews automatically each year unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends.
- Zenith Pro Lifetime — a one-time purchase of $24.99 (US). Not a subscription, nothing renews.
Either one unlocks every Pro feature. Prices in other countries are set by Apple's regional pricing and shown in the app before you buy.
How do I cancel the subscription?
Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not by us: open your subscriptions, or on your iPhone go to Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → Zenith → Cancel Subscription. Cancelling during the free trial costs you nothing. Pro features stay available until the end of the period you've paid for.
I bought Pro but it's locked (new phone, reinstall, etc.)
Open Settings inside Zenith and tap Restore Purchases, making sure you're signed in with the same Apple Account you bought with. Family Sharing is not enabled for Zenith Pro. If a restore doesn't do it, get in touch and we'll help.
Refunds
Apple handles all App Store billing, so refunds go through Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com. Tell us what went wrong too — if it's a bug, we'd like to fix it.
Your data
Zenith has no servers, no accounts and no analytics. Delete a track in the app to remove it, or delete the app to remove everything Zenith stored on your device. The full details are in the Privacy Policy.
Requirements
- iPhone running iOS 18 or later.
- Apple Watch running watchOS 10 or later, for the Pro watch app.
- Elevation is most accurate on iPhones with a barometric altimeter (iPhone 6 and later).
